Arriving from a glorious walk from Charlton with dogs in tow, the Great Western Arms near Aynho makes for a highly welcoming sight, with great food and drink to match.

The pub gets its name from the old Great Western Railway station nearby, taking you back to another time as you watch steam trains roll by on the one side and canal boats drifting down the idyllic Oxford Canal on the other. Together with the frequent passing of classic cars rolling through the countryside, it makes for the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle. Aside from the picturesque setting, the GWA itself has a charming interior, with original stonework, a grand fireplace and eclectic railway memorabilia creating an intimate setting. It also benefits from a regular trade of boaters, foodies and locals, which makes for an interesting and cheerful atmosphere.

But the food is where it really excels. Whilst the menu consists of a single sheet, the range on offer would appeal to even the most selective of tastes, from common pub fare of pies and steak to more unusual offerings such as swordfish. Food comes in generous portions and is well presented, and there is clearly careful consideration from the chef in putting together each dish. The mussels in particular come highly recommended. Although be sure to leave room for dessert, where a mouth-watering selection including oozing chocolate mudcakes and brandy snaps with sorbet is bound to tempt. To top it all off, make sure to wash your meal down with an award-winning pint from the Hook Norton brewery for a true taste of the Cotswolds.

And as a bonus, if you do come with dogs, not only are they welcome, but often also provided with treats – happy diners all round!
